John Molesworth - Our 1 st life member and a true stalwart of the club over the 60-80’s. John was not only president for 10years from 1969-79. But was groundsmen from 66-85 a great effort seeing the grounds were a swamp in the early 60’s. John was involved in all forms in the club and was a driving force in getting the club numbers up in the 1960’s especially after the war in the 30-40’s.
Harold Butler - Harold got involved in the club with his 2 grandson’s in the 1970’s. At this stage the club didn’t really a huge junior program but with Harold’s guidance the club’s junior numbers grew and he was an important factor in helping the club get premier status in the late 70’s. Harold enjoyed his coaching and players from his teams always mentioned how great a coach he was.
Warren (Wal) Chapman - Joined Club in 1967 with his brother Steve. Has been an active member ever since. Played an important role in getting the clubrooms built in what we sit in today. As an administrator Wal was president in 1982-83 and was secretary in 1972. Wal is a constant fiqure at the club and is always ringing me up asking where he can help. Just today he was down putting up the photos in the clubroom.
David Cosgrove - Speaking to past members they describe Dave as a bit of a character was always out in the public generating sponsorship for the club. Another important person in getting these clubrooms built. As an administrator was president at the club from 79-81.
John Hartley - Another important fiqure in the 70 and 80’s. John was a player in the 70’s for the club and stepped into different roles through those years one of which was secretary over that period. John got involved in the junior club in the early 1990’s. Apart from coaching. John was organiser of the schoolboy 6 a side tournament. The club still plays the 6 a side tournament every year with great success.
Frank Lancaster AKA Bomber - As a player Bomber mentioned if there was a 12 th man in a team he would be it. So after a brief playing career at the club he took up the scoring position for the premier team and has never relinquished the famous scoring book since. Bomber has scored through 3 decades and has seen the good and sometimes
not so good times at the club. We hope to see Bomber at the scorers table for many more years to come.
Ken Hjorth - Ken was involved as a player and administrator from 82-96. Ken played abit part in the committee during that period and keeping the club strong over the golden period over the 1980’s and early 90’s. Ken moved into the umpiring scene after Ellerslie and became involved in Auckland Umpires Association.
Wayne Young - Joined the club in the 1980’s with his son and became involved in the junior club in that period. Wayne was described as a great club man who would help with anything required to make sure the club was going strong. Wayne passed away in 2008 and is sorely missed.
Barry Frost- Important premier player in the 80 and 90’s his name can be seen many times on our honours board. After playing Barry got involved in our senior committee and is now our patron at the club. Barry has moved on to a successful umpiring career and in 2010 made his international debut in a 20/20 match between NZ vs Pakistan.
Brynley Goodger - Brynley initially got involved coaching a nursery grade team and went on to coaching them right up to year 8. Brynley has been involved with the committee for a number of years over the 90’s and 2000’s. Was chairman for 4 years over that period as well. Brynley is another great club guy and there will always be an email from Brynley letting me know things to help the club out.
Kevin Williams - Kevin joined the club in 1988-89 season as coach of his eldest son’s cricket team. From that point on Kevin became a key member in pushing the club to the next level in terms of it’s junior numbers. Over the 1990 and 2000’s the club’s junior numbers grew to almost 280 a fiqure never seen at the club. Kevin mentored a number of players in that period who have gone on to play premier cricket for the club and further honours. Kevin moved into the senior club in the 2005 and coached our premier team for 3 seasons.
Raewynn Cowie - Joined the club in 1989 when a young 5 year old boy standing in front decided to take up cricket. Raewynn became involved in the junior committee and worked tirelessly over the 15 years she was at the club. Was secretary and vice president over this period as well. Big reason along with Kevin why the junior club was so successful over that period.
Mark Benefield - Mark Benefield what can I say. Been a great man for Ellerslie Cricket as have all our life members. Mark has looked after nursery grade for about 20 years giving our kids the necessary skills to grow as cricketers as well as coaching. Mark has been president from 2006-08 and a committee member over those years.
Shane Wilson - Shane has been with the club for over 26 years of continuous service to Ellerslie Cricket Club. Shane has been the driving force behind the junior programme, giving countless hours each summer to ensure it runs smoothly. He coaches, mentors, and organises equipment and logistics so coaches and families can focus on the kids. Shane is synonymous with the club’s upkeep — routinely repairing gazebos, sightscreens, and scoreboards, and preparing kitbags and equipment for every junior side. His hands‑on work keeps matches and training sessions running without fuss. When he has a free Saturday in his busy schedule, he continues to represent the Presidents on the field. His long dedication to the club illustrates what it means to be a club person.
Milan Jasarevic - Milan joined the club as a junior during the late 1990s and worked his way to senior cricket. He spent a decade-plus contributing across the 4ths and 3rds, with periods in premier and a long stint as a dependable premier reserve throughout the 2010s. He held many different positions on the board from 2009 until 2023 when he was the Chairperson (4 years). For roughly ten years Milan was one of ECC’s two representatives on the Ellerslie Sports Club board. As a structural engineer he donated hundreds of hours pro bono to the new clubrooms project, providing technical work in lieu of financial contribution. His unpaid engineering input and long‑term board work laid foundations the club now benefits from and will continue to benefit from with the move to the new clubrooms.
Kris Baker - Kris Baker was of the club’s standout cricketers for over a decade. His presence on the field set standards for commitment and intensity. More than 15 years ago, at a time of serious upheaval when the premier team separated from University, most senior committee members left and the club manager changed, Kris stepped into leadership. He recruited people, built systems, and restored stability, serving as Chairman and President and shaping practices that still define the club’s culture. Where the club is today would not have been possible without his leadership and contributions during the transition.
Nigel Wall - Beginning as a social cricketer, Nigel moved into junior committee work, became a team manager, and ultimately served on the senior club committee. Over more than 20 years he repeatedly stepped up to do what needed doing, always effectively and without fanfare. Nigel has been a tireless supporter of both people and infrastructure — helping develop cricketers, mentoring volunteers, and strengthening the club’s social culture. His contributions are defined by consistent, practical service rather than spotlight moments.
