Years 2, 3 and 4
Our Years 2, 3 and 4 boys teams play at Michaels Ave every Saturday (we had trialed Friday nights as well last season, and may do so again this coming season) against other Ellerslie and Cornwall teams following the Kiwi Cricket format.
The games are played using “Incrediballs.” These are soft cricket balls made out of PVC, which have a stitched seam like a real cricket ball. There is no need for pads, gloves or other protective equipment, as the balls are much softer than a real ball.
Games start at 8:30am and run for 2 hours. Each side bats for 20 overs. Each batting pair bats a minimum of 4 overs whether they get out or not. Each player bowls a minimum of 2 overs. The emphasis of the game format is for everyone to have FUN, and to have equal opportunity to develop cricket skills.
You can find a full breakdown of the rules for this grade here.
Teams will have one practise session during the week.
Year 5 and 6
At Years 5 and 6 teams start to travel around Auckland playing in the Cricket Express Junior Leagues Auckland competition operated and administrated by the Auckland Cricket Association.
They play with a white PVC ball, called a Kookaburra Commander, which is hard like an ordinary leather cricket ball, but more water resistant. There are pads, gloves and helmets provided in the team bag, but players are encouraged to bring their own gear.
At this age, the competition is split into regional pools to minimize travel, wherever possible. However, low numbers of team entries can affect this.
Playing conditions for these grades can be found on the Auckland Cricket website, here.
